Why does Facebook have so many employees?
Answer by Balaji Viswanathan:
Let us look at this with an analogy. How much effort do you need to store 50 liters of water? Not much. Some cheap plastic and $1 could help you achieve what you want to do. It doesn't require much maintenence either.
However, if you want to hold 20 billion liters of water, you need to spend enormous amount on the infrastructure. You need millions of tons of concrete, support engineers, security folks, architects and so on.
Engineering massive information systems is no different:
- You need an army of security engineers to both make sure that your data doesn't get leaked out and in case of a breach lock quickly.
- You need an army of perf engineers to make sure each page loads up instantaneously – although 1 billion people might be browsing simulataneously – watching images, videos and text.
- Marketing professionals who would ensure that the billions of revenue flows in.
- Developers who will constantly add new features.
