Zille for Premier

Zille exudes a school-marmish vibe, and she probably does have a certain administrative efficiency perhaps - but is she a good leader? She put her foot in it with her all-male cabinet and has now compounded her dubious status amongst  gender activists by demonstrating what appear to be blatant double standards. She blasted Jacob Zuma…

Spooking the Mail & Guardian

I look forward to the Mail & Guardian every Friday. It is a hugely informative and entertaining read.  I think it is one of the last standing bastions of journalism in the country, it was especially so under the brave and visionary editorship of  Ferial Haffajee. However, I am disturbed by what appears to be…

British commentators

There is something deeply offensive about certain British commentators, some of them associated with the BBC,  adopting an infuriating, righteous tone that comes so easily to them when reporting on Asia or Africa. Well, here is a reply from a well informed erudite South African to a badly written piece in the Daily Mail, by…

Twitter

...and Twitter is for what? I can understand how a non-profit campgaign or say, an election campaign or some such big multi-stakeholder project would need something similar to alert its followers, but Twitter for orinary folk like you and me appears to be a tedious exercise in mind numbing narcissism. I am open to changing…

Service standards in South Africa

... generally suck. Outside of the retail industry, no-one appears to have a clue about customer service. Witness the four cellphone network companies - and the number of complaints against them on Hellopeter.com - Check out Telkom's customer service  or call centre hell as it otherwise known. I spent weeks attempting to transfer a domain…

Content Construction in Joomla

I had a look at the K2 Content Construction component - I was intrigued because it claims to be a similar to Drupal's CCK (Content Construction Kit), of which I had heard a lot.  I installed it and yes, it is very similar to Drupal - baffling interface and baffling documentation. The lack of a…

Sidebar missing in Joomla 1.5.10

In Jooml 1.5.10, I am battling to find a plugin that will load a module based when an article is loaded, instead of by Menu. Certain extensions, like the iJoomla component appear to enable this - but I think this is something that the core Joomla installation should have by default.

ErrorFix Scam

There is a an application that purports to be a registry cleaner - called ErrorFix - IT IS A SCAM - and will seriously compromise your system. Do not download and install this malware. Strangely enough ClickBank continues to offer it as a legitimate affiliate product - has no-one ever informed them? Please see this…

The tacky (sic) word

I have noted the increasing use of the (sic) word - mostly in press reports by South African journalists who wish to draw derogatory attention to grammatical or spelling errors by politicians and prominent personalities. I think it is childish and patronising- and probably racist too.

Is it all about the money, then?

Many people appear to equate mistake cap-ex spend for  value, which, in my opinion, is an indication of lazy thinking. I had the most unusual experience recently. The deputy director of a prominent gender equality organisation in South Africa called me up and remarked on my very carefully worked-out quotation for a fairly large web…
